Finite Element Modeling of Wind Instruments

Participants: Song Wang, Antoine Lefebvre and Gary Scavone

Period: 2009 - ongoing

Summary

The goal of this research is to use the Finite Element Method to investigate the acoustic characteristics of systems that are difficult to model using traditional one-dimensional piece-wise cylindrical and conical sections. Current and past work on this topic has focused on woodwind instrument toneholes, saxophone mouthpieces, and the implementation of visco-thermal boundary conditions.
