This research focuses on the design of a saxophone with improved acoustical and mechanical characteristics, accomplished with the aid of new materials, physical modelling, impedance measurements, and collaborations with professional musicians. It includes a survey of subjective assessments by saxophonists to establish quality criteria, the physical parameters that influence such criteria, and the development of experimemts to verify and to characterize the influence of those parameters. Finally, the work will entail the progressive design and construction of a new instrument in collaboration with industry.
The Wind Instrument Acoustic Toolkit (WIAT) is a Python package being developed in the course of this research.
