Mini-Music  Q & A

Taking the Mystery Out of Compositional Process
Profs. Julie E. Cumming and Peter Schubert

Questions and Answers:

1 - Who decided the rules about which intervals were allowed and why were those intervals chosen?

The rules for melodic motions in the lead voice of the canon depend on the vertical intervals that will result between the voices. If you do the right melodic intervals, the vertical intervals will sound good. The vertical intervals that sound good are called consonances. We don't know who the original author of this rule was, but it could have been discovered by singers experimenting.
