Jean Marchand

Jean Marchand poursuit une carrière de pianiste comme soliste, chambriste et accompagnateur. Il a collaboré entre autres avec la violoniste Denise Lupien, les violoncellistes Matt Haimovitz, Philippe Muller, Elizabeth Dolin et Antonio Lysy, les barytons Allan Monk et Nathaniel Watson et les pianistes Lise Boucher et Dale Bartlett. Avec Matt Haimovitz, il a effectué plusieurs tournées aux Etats-Unis qui l’ont amené à jouer entre autre au Lincoln Center à New York et à San Francisco. Il ont aussi gravé ensemble deux enregistrements sous étiquettes Oxingale et Sony Classical. Il a joué comme soliste avec l’Orchestre Métropolitain sous la direction de Joseph Rescigno et avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Laval dirigé par Jean-François Rivest. Il a participé aux Festivals de musique de chambre de Montréal et d’Ottawa ainsi qu’aux Festivals internationaux de Lanaudière et du Domaine Forget (il y fait partie du personnel enseignant depuis huit ans). Un passionné de musique contemporaine, Jean Marchand a créé plusieurs œuvres de compositeurs québécois et donnait, en octobre 2008, avec la violoncelliste Carole Sirois, la première mondiale de la Sonate pour violoncelle et piano de Raymond Daveluy. On a pu l’entendre à maintes reprises sur les ondes de la SRC et de Radio-Two. Jean Marchand a enregistré plusieurs disques dont Variations for two pianos avec Dale Bartlett (CBC records) et Musique de salon avec Lise Boucher (Atma Classique). Il est présentement accompagnateur-répétiteur à la Schulich School of music de l’université McGill. Jean Marchand a étudié au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (1965-1971) auprès de Irving Heller et avec Karl Engel et a été président de l’Académie de musique du Québec de 2005 à 2008.

Jean Marchand is pursuing his career in piano as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist. Musicians he has worked with include violinist Denise Lupien, cellists Matt Haimovitz, Philippe Muller, Elizabeth Dolin and Antonio Lysy, baritones Allan Monk and Nathaniel Watson and pianists Lise Boucher and Dale Bartlett. He has toured the United States with Matt Haimovitz several times, playing at New York’s Lincoln Center and in San Francisco. They also recorded together twice on the Oxingale and Sony Classical labels. He has played as a soloist for the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal under the direction of Joseph Rescigno and with the Orchestre symphonique de Laval under the direction of Jean-François Rivest. He has participated in the Montreal and Ottawa chamber music festivals and in the Festival International de Lanaudière and the Festival International du Domaine Forget (he has been on the Domaine Forget’s teaching staff for the past eight years). A great fan of contemporary music, Jean Marchand has performed a number of works by Quebec composers, and in October 2008 performed the world premiere of Raymond Daveluy’s Sonate pour violoncelle et piano with cellist Carole Sirois. He is heard frequently on Radio-Canada and Radio-Two. Jean Marchand has recorded a number of albums, including Variations for two pianos with Dale Bartlett (CBC Records) and Musique de salon with Lise Boucher (Atma Classique). He is currently an accompanist at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (1965-71) with Irving Heller and Karl Engel and was president of the Académie de musique du Québec from 2005 to 2008.
