Anthony Tan

Anthony Tan cherche à écrire de la musique inspirée par somatisme, métaphores biologiques, illusions auditives et systèmes musicaux non occidentaux. Sa musique a été interprétée par l’Ensemble Cairn (France), l’Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne (Canada), l’Ensemble Moderne Academie (Allemagne), le Rubbing Stone Ensemble (Canada) et l’Ensemble de musique contemporaine de McGill (Canada).

Anthony Tan a été un lauréat du Concours international 2008 de composition de Hamburg Klangwerktage. Il a aussi mérité la médaille d’or du Royal Conservatory of Music et reçu maintes bourses de l’Alberta Foundation of the Arts et du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Il a aussi suivi le programme de composition du Centre national des arts et de l’Académie Internationale de Composition du Blanc-Mesnil. Tan a aussi eu la chance exceptionnelle de travailler avec la Cantos Music Foundation de Calgary où il a agi comme interprète des instruments musicaux et a passé des étés à créer de la documentation audio et littéraire pour la collection.

Tan s’investit aussi dans la musique pour la danse contemporaine et a écrit pour des compagnies comme l’École Merce Cunningham (New York), Tangente (Montréal) et Ephemeral Industry (Calgary) ainsi que divers chorégraphes indépendants de Montréal et de Calgary. Il travaille présentement à la musique d’un court métrage sur la danse commandé par Bravo!FACT et EMPAC Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Dance Movies Commission.

Avant ses travaux de recherche comme compositeur, il étudié la génétique, les mathématiques et la philosophie orientale. Il poursuit un doctorat en composition à l’Université McGill de Montréal, Canada, sous la supervision de John Rea et Sean Ferguson.

Anthony Tan aims to write music inspired by somaticism, biological metaphors, auditory illusions, and non-western musical systems. His music has been performed by Ensemble Cairn (France), L’Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne (Canada), the Ensemble Moderne Academie (Germany), the Rubbing Stone Ensemble (Canada) and the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble (Canada).

Anthony Tan was a laureate of the 2008 International Composer Competition of the Hamburg Klangwerktage. Other awards include the Gold medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music and numerous grants from the Alberta Foundation of the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts. He has attended the National Arts Centre Composer's Program and the Academie Internationale de Composition du Blanc-Mesnil. Tan has also had the unique opportunity to work at the Cantos Music Foundation in Calgary where he served as an interpreter of their musical instruments as well as spent summers creating audio and literary documentation of their collection.

Tan is also involved with music for contemporary dance and has written for companies such as the Merce Cunningham School (New York), Tangente (Montreal), and Ephemeral Industry (Calgary) as well as various independent choreographers in Montreal, and Calgary. He is currently working on music for a short dance film commissioned by Bravo!FACT and the EMPAC Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Dance Movies Commission.

Prior to his research as a composer, he studied genetics, mathematics, and eastern philosophy. He is currently pursuing his PhD in composition at McGill University in Montreal, Canada under the supervision of John Rea and Sean Ferguson.
