Ewald Cheung

Ewald Cheung a commencé ses études à l’âge de quatre ans à l’École Suzuki, à Edmonton. Il a aussi été l’élève de James Keene, jadis premier violon de l'Orchestre symphonique d’Edmonton. Il est présentement l’élève du réputé violoniste Jonathan Crow, à l’École de musique Schulich de l’Université McGill.

Ewald a eu beaucoup de succès dans maints concours. En 2005, il a remporté le Northern Alberta Concerto Competition et a pu se produire avec l'Orchestre des jeunes d’Edmonton. Il a été cinq fois lauréat du Concours de musique du Canada de 2000 à 2004, finissant premier en 2001 et en 2003, ce qui lui a valu des prestations avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary. En 2007, Ewald a été lauréat du Concours Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Standard Life. Plus récemment, il a remporté le Concours d'instruments à cordes Shean à Edmonton.

Ewald a aussi joué avec l'Orchestre symphonique d’Edmonton en 2004 et en 2006. Il donnera un concert avec cet orchestre en octobre 2010. Il se produira aussi avec l’Orchestre philharmonique d’Hamilton en novembre 2010.

Ewald a eu le privilège d’être premier violon de l'Orchestre des jeunes d’Edmonton de 2005 à 2007, un rôle qu’il assume présentement au sein de l'Orchestre symphonique de McGill. En 2008, Ewald a occupé cette fonction au sein de l'orchestre du Festival estival de musique du Colorado College.

En musique de chambre, Ewald a été membre fondateur de l’ancien Quatuor à cordes Roddick, sous la direction d’André Roy. En avril 2009, ce quatuor a pris part au Concours international d'instruments à cordes de Londres.

En 2004, Ewald a été choisi comme un des trois enfants prodiges dans le documentaire Minor Keys de l’Office national du film du Canada, réalisé par Mieko Ouchi. Le documentaire a été diffusé à l’émission The Nature of Things animée par David Suzuki.

Ewald bénéficie de prestigieuses bourses : la Lloyd-Carr Harris pour instrumentistes à cordes de l’Université McGill, une bourse Anne Burrows, une bourse du Winspear Fund et une bourse de la Victoria Foundation.

Ewald Cheung began his studies at the age of four at the Suzuki School in Edmonton, and later studied with James Keene, former concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony. Ewald is currently studying with renowned violinist, Jonathan Crow, at the McGill University, Schulich School of Music.

Ewald has had success in many competitions. In 2005, Ewald won the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition, which led to a performance with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Ewald is also a five time laureate of the Canadian Music Competitions from 2000 to 2004, winning in 2001 and 2003, which led to performances with the Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2007, Ewald was a laureate of the Standard Life Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal Competition. Most recently, Ewald won the Shean Strings Competition in Edmonton.

Ewald has also performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2004, and in 2006. He will be performing with them again in October 2010. He will also be performing with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2010.

Ewald has had the privilege to serve as concertmaster of the Edmonton Youth Orchestra from 2005 to 2007, and is a current co-concertmaster for the McGill Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, Ewald served as concertmaster at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival orchestra. In chamber music, Ewald was a founding member of the former Roddick String Quartet, coached by André Roy. In April 2009, the Roddick String Quartet competed at the London International String Quartet Competition.

In 2004, Ewald was chosen as one of three child prodigies in the documentary, Minor Keys produced by the National Film Board of Canada, directed by Mieko Ouchi. The documentary was aired on The Nature of Things with host, David Suzuki.

Ewald is a current recipient of the prestigious Lloyd-Carr Harris String Scholarship from McGill University, the Anne Burrows Scholarship, the Winspear Fund and the Victoria Foundation.
