Patrick Hansen

Patrick Hansen est directeur des études d’opéra pour Opéra McGill à l’École de musique Schulich de l’Université McGill. Artiste versatile, M. Hansen est également metteur en scène, chef, répétiteur vocal et professeur de jeu dramatique. Les deux saisons précédentes il a dirigé Thésée, The Rape of Lucretia et Dialogues des Carmélites, Albert Herring, Così fan tutte et Alcina.

En été 2009, il est retourné en tant que directeur associé de la Opera Company Janiec au Brevard Music Center, North Carolina où il a dirigé la Brevard Symphony Orchestra dans des productions de Suor Angelica et Gianni Schicchi. En juillet 2009, il a mis en scène Camelot au Ash Lawn Summer Festival. Auparavant directeur de l’administration artistique du Florida Grand Opera où il était responsable de l’engagement des artistes, chefs et metteurs en scène, M. Hansen a également été directeur des études musicales pour le Young American Artist Programme du Glimmerglass Opera durant six saisons. Avant de se joindre au F.G.O., il a été directeur musical du Opera Musical Theatre au Ithaca College.

Ces anciens élèves jouent sur Broadway en Wicked, Hairspray, South Pacific, A Tale of Two Cities, et la reprise de West Side Story. M. Hansen a aussi formé des jeunes artistes qu’on peut maintenant entendre sur les scènes des compagnies nord-américaines les plus importantes, y compris le Metropolitan Opera, le New York City Opera, l’Opéra de Montréal, la Canadian Opera Company, le Seattle Opera et le Chicago Lyric Opera.

En plus d’avoir été chef invité au Pittsburgh Opera, Tulsa Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Ash Lawn Summer Festival, Opera Memphis et Shreveport Opera, il a été directeur musical du Opera Festival of New Jersey où il a dirigé la première mondiale de l’édition révisée de Burning Bright de Frank Lewin, Il Prigioniero de Dallapiccola, A Kéksakállu Herceg Vara et Die Zauberflöte. Parmi ses mises en scène on compte la production acclamée par la critique de La Bohème à Charlottesville, Virginie, ainsi que les productions de Così fan tutte, Suor Angelica, Dido and Aeneas, Dialogues des Carmélites, Riders to the Sea, A Hand of Bridge, The Impresario et Die Zauberflöte.

Il a également été répétiteur au Juilliard Opera Center, le Chicago Lyric Opera et le Des Moines Metro Opera, maître de choeur au Tulsa Opera et Opera Memphis, et chef en résidence au Ash Lawn Summer Festival. Le printemps dernier il a fait partie du jury du prestigieux Prix Richard-Tucker.

M. Hansen a obtenu son baccalauréat en interprétation du piano au Simpson College et sa maîtrise en interprétation du piano au Kansas City Conservatory of Music de l’University of Missouri. Entre autres fonctions, il est l’éditeur adjoint de l’Anthologie de l’opéra des éditions G. Schirmer, volume 1 (éditée par Robert Larsen) et a été le pianiste pour l’enregistrement d’une série de méthodes pour les cuivres du Canadian Brass.

Patrick Hansen is the Director of Opera Studies for Opera McGill at the Schulich School of Music. A versatile artist, Mr. Hansen is a stage director, conductor, vocal coach, and acting teacher. The past two seasons he was stage director for Thésée, The Rape of Lucretia, and Dialogues des Carmélites, Albert Herring, Così fan tutte, and Alcina.

During the summer of 2009, he returned as the Associate Director of the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina where he conducted Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. In July of 2009, he was stage director for Camelot at the Ash Lawn Summer Festival.

Formerly the Director of Artistic Administration for Florida Grand Opera where he was responsible for casting artists, conductors, and directors, Mr. Hansen was also the Director of Musical Studies for the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera for six seasons. Previous to his joining F.G.O., he was the Music Director of Opera / Musical Theatre at Ithaca College.

His past students can be seen on Broadway in Wicked, Hairspray, South Pacific, A Tale of Two Cities, and the revival of West Side Story. His former young artists sing leading roles at major opera companies of the world including the Met, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Washington Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Opéra de Montréal, Houston Grand Opera, Covent Garden, and Seattle Opera.

In addition to his conducting credits at Pittsburgh Opera, Tulsa Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Ash Lawn Summer Festival, Opera Memphis and Shreveport Opera, he is the former Music Director of Opera Festival of New Jersey where he conducted the world premiere of the revised edition of Frank Lewin’s Burning Bright, Dallapiccola’s Il Prigioniero, Bartok’s A Kékszakállu Herceg Vara, and Die Zauberflöte. His stage directing credits include the critically-acclaimed production of La Bohème in Charlottesville, Virginia as well as productions of Così fan tutte, Suor Angelica, Dido and Aeneas, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Riders to the Sea, A Hand of Bridge, The Impresario, and The Magic Flute.

Mr. Hansen was a fellow in opera coaching at The Juilliard Opera Center, a repetiteur with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Des Moines Metro Opera, chorus master with the Tulsa Opera and Opera Memphis, and was the resident conductor at Ash Lawn Summer Festival. He has served on the judging panel for the prestigious Richard Tucker Award.

Mr. Hansen received his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Simpson College, and his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Among his other credits, he is the Assistant Editor of G. Schirmer’s Operatic Anthology series, volume 1 (edited by Robert L. Larsen) and was the pianist for a recorded set of Brass Methods with the Canadian Brass.
