« So, you really want to know the meaning of the Blower's Daughter? »

The number one google search for people coming to my site is "meaning of the blower's daughter". This is interesting, because I have often wondered myself what the lyrics are referring to. If you have not yet heard this song, you need to. It's a song by Damien Rice, and it's unbelievably written. And in my opinion, the vague nature of the lyrics is a large part of what makes the song so striking.

So here's the thing. I did my own search, and came across a post on Damien's web discussion board. And there is a post there where someone "close to the horse's mouth" explains what the song is all about, and who (and what) the blower is. If you really want to know, follow the link at the bottom. But just remember, once you know, the song will never be able to be about that person you sort of imagined it to be about, it will forever be someone else's story, and never yours. If you couldn't guess, I'm a big fan of leaving a bit of mystery in people's poetry, its always more meaningful that way. But, if you are ready for curiosity to kill your cat, here goes -> LINK TO POST

It doesn't really explain much except who the daughter is.. the rest is still up to your imagination.. It didn't ruin anything for me...
Every song, every movie or tv show is based on someone else's experience and the when people listen to music they are listening to others experiences and the purpose is to explain that one is not alone that there are others out there with the same experience. Instead here we want to know who she is to him b/c there is someone else that is the person " I can't take my eyes off of"

That site does say who is blower's daughter and it does not ruin my imagination. It's still beautiful. I don't why posting in above said the site don't have the answer? Is it the same website I am looking at........

hi.
i dont think that 'blower's daughter' "truth" will harm your fantasy or ruin the song in any other way. it just explains, makes it more clear and logical. blower's daughter in some way - whatever the real one is - is our common dream, love, memories..whatever. i seriously suggest you to check and find it out - whatever Damien meant by that line. it's very simple and sweet

A FEW OF US GIRLS IN OFFICE IN THE DEPTHS OF MEXICO PLAYING DAMIEN RICE OVER AND OVER THINK THE DAUGHTER MAY HAVE EARNED HER NAME ANOTHER WAY. MAYBE WE HAVE BEEN IN THIS SMALL TOWN TOO LONG AND HAVE NOTHING LEFT BUT OUR IMAGINATIONS.
LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS.

I THINK YOU LEFT YOUR CAPS LOCK ON.

I also don't know if I follow your logic. Keep in mind it is the father who is the blower... meaning that all the girl would have to do to "EARN" her name is to be born. Well, and continue living I guess, otherwise she'd be the blower's dead daughter. But keep up the investigation, I think you've almost cracked the case on this one.

I think he mention his teacher's daughter because she could represent an impossible, platonic love.

In my mind it will always be Natalie Portman playing Alice Ayres (or should I say Jane Jones). I first heard this song in "Closer", and honestly Natalie did a magnificent job keeping my eyes on her.

Thank you so much
I've read the comment,
and I think it do help me to translate this song to my own language now.
Though I know who the blower's daughter really is,still there is another blower's daughter in my mind, and I really can't take my eyes off him.
Another reason why I love this song is that the singer's passion and his deep voice.
I knew this song from the movie called "Closer".The beginning is so beautiful with this song.

You were right about one thing. Definitely there was something in the song that I had imagined for my own. But after clicking on the site, like you said, the story instantly became someone else's. Damn, why did I click the site

I'm with you - I've decided to walk down the isle to this song - very soon! I know what it means to me and that's enough...

i kinda wish i could have been content with the mystery..but i never am...if there is a way to know..i respect those who can be content with it that way..

ironically, the person that this song reminds me of most, is the child of exactly what the reference is to..but both parents..

i found that to be purely uncanny..

Aw man, I was really hoping that by knowing his reason for the song it would make me forget mine. But it didn't. At least after reading all these comments I know that it's a happy song for some!

This is a very beautiful song! Damien is special. I thought about leaving it a mystery, but I'm 47 and I have to have some answers in life. ;-) I clicked the link and it didn't ruin it for me at all. I was thinking of all kinds of 'blowing'. It's actually kinda nice. Thanks...

The Blower in question wasn't a clarinet teacher, but the cockney rhyming slang for the telephone (Stick with me, I know it sounds ambiguous!). Before he was in Juniper Damien worked at a call centre selling mortgages and loans, and spent all day on the telephone. He grew sick of speaking to people for 8 hours a day without seeing anyone's face, and he began to fantasize about the people behind the many voices he heard. One summer day he phoned a house and a girl with a melodic soft, sweet voice answered the phone. He was calling for her father, but he wasn't in. Protocol said he should have ended the call and phoned back another time, but he was mesmerized and enchanted by her voice and ended up chatting to her for over an hour. Damien began a secret relationship of sorts with the girl, always calling when he knew her father wouldn't be home just so they could talk, despite knowing that it could get him sacked. He dreamed of her at night, daydreamed about her all day long.

This continued for over a month, but one day he called and there was no answer. For the next week he called again numerous times a day, but still nobody picked up the phone. Confused by this abrupt end to the relationship, Damien became angry and obsessive (you were right about the obsessive bit) and found out the address of the girl. He took a day off work and got the bus out to the address.

Hidden in a hedge he watched the front door fervently for any signs of life, but he didn't expect what he finally saw. The voice was unmistakably the same, and as she shouted 'bye mum', closing the front door behind her Damien was amazed to see that this dreamgirl of his was wearing a school uniform. He couldn't believe his eyes and could not stop staring at her in shock. All the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place - she was at home during the school holidays, led him on and played games, then when school started back she just stopped. Damien was angry but obviously couldn't tell anybody about it for fear of being branded a perv. He left the company and formed Juniper shortly after.
