Remarks:

  • This instrument is nameless. Cristofori XXVII/XXVIII is a label to distiguish it from the other instruments in this site, being XXVII/XXVIII the inventori numbers related to it in the List of instruments constructed by Cristofori published in Montanari, Giuliana: Bartolomeo Cristofori[95].
  1. This 1716 cello, now owned by an amateur cellist in Basel, is a beautiful instrument, a bit larger than today's standard size, and has still the original hand-written label 'Bartolomeo Cristofori in Firenze 1716'. Certificates and letters by Hill & Sons and Charles Beare confirm its authenticity. The actual owner points out that it has a beautiful sound. Being a bit larger than usual it has not only a strong bass but also light and powerful high tones.
As far as known Cristofori made as a luthier only three celli and one doublebass. His main dedication, keyboard instruments, led him to improve the harpsichord replacing the jacks and quills by hammer stops resulting in the arpicimbalo che fa il piano e il forte (harpsichord with piano and forte) - as stated in an inventory of musical instruments belonging to the prince Ferdinand of Tuscany from 1700 - thus the pianoforte, for whose invention he acquired most fame.
Born in Padua in 1655 he is said to have been a pupil of Nicol Amati about 1680. Later on he went to Florence, where he worked under the patronage of Ferdinand De Medici.

The university asked Ms. Salvato to give the violin back but she refused and explained how she came into possession of the Duke of Alcantara: she had received it from her former husband, who in turn got it from an aunt. As she laid dying, the aunt pulled the violin from under her bed and told to her nephew, she had found it by the side of a freeway in Los Angeles. In December 1995 the litigation was resolved out of court and the University of California came again in possession of the Duke of Alcantara after having missed it for almost 30 years. On his Strad Markevitch says: 'I performed all the Bach suites on it in Carnegie Hall. However, I sold it in 1972. It was painful to do because I would have liked to have kept it in the family, but I wasn't happy with it. I don't like Strads for the simple reason that they always have a "Strad" sound. I prefer to create my own sound. I play a French cello now, a Lt from 1839, a docile instrument that sounds well wherever I play.' Rooney, Dennis: Mastering Bach[126]

V - 1755 Gagliano, N.
V Emiliani 1703 Strad., A.
V Lord Dunraven 1710 Strad., A.
Remarks:

Anne-Sophie Mutter acquired the Emiliani in 1979, the Lord Dunraven in 1984. About the later one she says: 'Bein & Fushi brought it to Zurich. I only had to play on it for two or three minutes in order to say to myself: "Whatever it takes, I must have this instrument". ...' Rooney, Dennis D.: Illuminating Focus[125]
'Which of your Stradivari have you selected for the sonatas?' asked Georges Gad Ms. Mutter having in mind the Beethoven Sonatas. She answered: 'The "Lord Dunraven" from 1710. I bought it a dozen years ago. My first, the "Emiliani", is superb, but is missing a certain dimension. It sounds superb, but that's all. It has no stridency. It lacks unbridled power. I need this harshness for the eruptive moments of the Beethoven sonatas. One needs it for Brahms, Sibelius and contemporary works'. The factory employed about 12,000 workers. In recognition of his great pioneering labor he was rewarded with the title "Baron", which according to Russian custom of that time, passed to his 3 sons.

V - 1733 Klotz, Georg
V ex Hubay, ex Gerle 1726 Strad., A.
Remarks:

Gerle's teacher Gza de Kresz was a pupil of Hubay and Sevcik. Gerle as a child is said to have heard Hubay play the instrument he would own many years later. After a recital with the cellist Piatigorsky the audience was so impressed with the affinity between Gerle and his instrument the ex Hubay that several members of the Board of the San Diego Symphony decided to help him acquire it. Originally Gerle did not want accept such an obligation and asked Piatigorsky for guidance, who meant: 'You must not let such a rare and great opportunity to go by, even if you have to rob a bank, you must accept the offer. One way or the other, you will find a way to pay back the loan".
With ownership came curiosity and Mr. Gerle began with the research of the instrument's provenance. He traced the way the ex Hubay went and found out that it formerly had been owned by Paganini. ONeill Beall, Judson: Robert Gerle.[105]
Unfortunately Mr. Gerle had to part with his instrument - and inseparable companion for over 30 years - due to a shoulder injury, which put an end to his career as a violinist.Gerle, Robert: Letter to Jos Snchez-Penzo dated September 13, 1998 (unpublished).[55]
