Computer Music Seminar 5 (MUMT 614B) Thursdays 1:30-4:30pm LSR #1 Musical Data Mining Music Information Retrieval, extraction, exploration, mining This seminar will investigate the current research activities in the area of music information retrieval. Although the field is releatively new, it emcompassed various music disciplines such as music analysis, music library, music database, music education, and music pshychology. Each student will be expected to present various music information retrieval issues a including literature reviews. Each presentation and demonstration should be accompanied by web pages created by the presenter. Final project may consist of software development, a theoretical paper, or an extended review papers. Class format will be presentations followed by discussions. Potential topics include: Themefinder, MELDEX, Cantus, audio content analysis, web crawling, audio content-based search, melodic similarities, computer-aided transcription, timbre recognition, speech/music separation, P2P technologies (Gnutella, Napster), audio and music formats (MPEG-4/7/21, MP3, XML, GUIDO), and Web Services.
