ISO. Mpeg faq. http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/faq/mpeg.htm. (accessed January 18th 2006)
FAQ from the official MPEG website where one can find basic information on MPEG: what MPEG stands for, how to join the group, where to find copies of the standards etc ... Pretty superficial but should be reliable.
Koenen, R. Mpeg-4 overview. http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/standards/mpeg-4/mpeg-4.htm. (accessed January 18th 2006)
Overview of the standard by one of the main contributor, on the official MPEG website. Complete, without being too technical. It provides good pointers, that should be reliable.

Vulgarization article to present the MPEG-4 standard by a contributor to the standard. Hence it might be biased ... Nevertheless it gives a pretty good and compact overview. It was very helpful for this presentation.
Moeritz, S. and Diepold, K. 2005. Understanding MPEG-4. Focal Press. http://library.books24x7.com/toc.asp?bookid=13519\&view=toc.
Interesting marketing point of view. The aim of this book was more to give an idea of the commercial potential of the standard to company executives. I used it to get more information on the structure of ISO and to put MPEG into context.
Pereira, F. and Ebrahimi, T. 2002. The MPEG-4 Book, chap. 2. Prentice Hall. http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/0130616214/ch02.
Very detailed description of the MPEG-4 standard, clear explanations and graphs ( which I used in my presentation).
Scheirer, E. 1998. The mpeg-4 structured audio standard. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, vol. 6: pp. 3801—3804
Overview by the main contributor to SAOL / SASL. This article describes the different components of the Structured Audio (SA) tool-set, their capabilities and presents the different “flavors” or profiles of compliant terminals as well as some possible applications. It was written before the standard was finalized so it might not contain all the new features but the core structure is there.
--------------. 1999. {Structured audio and effects processing in the MPEG-4 multimedia standard}. Multimedia Systems, vol. 7(1): pp. 11—22.
A more detailed description of the MPEG-4 SA language with, in particular, more information on the basic concepts behind structured multimedia content. It is more extensive so it is to look into after Scheirer's 98 paper if one wants to get a quick idea of what SA is about.
Vercoe, B., Gardner, W., and Scheirer, E. 1998. Structured audio: creation, transmission, and rendering of parametric sound representations. Proceedings of the IEEE, vol. 86(5): pp. 922—940.
Provides a theoretical definition of structured multimedia content by references in the field. I have not had time to study it in depth but it could prove very interesting

A technical overview of three main standards. Often uses too many acronyms so it may not be the first book you want to read on the subject. As the title suggests, it is handy if you already know about the standards and if you just need to brush up. Nevertheless I found some good information on the MPEG-4 audio scene.
