Configuring your computer to dial in to the Internet

Connect to the Internet with McGill's DAS

McGill's Dialup Access Service (DAS) server provides support for the "scriptless" Password Authentication Protocol (PAP). All that is required to connect to DAS is standard PPP dialup access software as installed by default with most operating systems.

To set up a scriptless connection for Windows or MacOS, please refer to the instructions below.

Windows 98

Initial setup

Double click the "My Computer" icon.

Double click the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

Double click the "Make New Connection" icon.

"Type a name for the computer you are dialing": McGill DAS

"Select a modem/device": (pick your modem in the list).

Click the "Next >" button.

"Type the phone number for the computer you want to call":

"Area code": (leave blank)

"Telephone number": 514-398-8211

"Select the Country Code": Canada (1)

Click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Finish" button.

Right click on the "McGill DAS" icon and select "Properties."

Select the "Server Types" tab, make sure there is a check mark next to "Only Enable Software Compression..."

Click "OK."

Drag the "McGill DAS" icon to the desktop.

Click the "Yes" button to create a shortcut on the desktop.

Connecting to DAS

Double click the "Shortcut to McGill DAS" icon.

Type your DAS Username on the User name line.

Type your DAS Password on the Password line.

Check the "Save Password" box if you wish.

Click the Connect button to log onto the Internet.

If you subscribe to the Call Waiting telephone service:
Click the "Dial Properties..." button.

Check the "To Disable Call Waiting, dial..." box.

Select *70, from the popup list.

Click the "OK" button.

Windows NT

Initial setup

Double click the "My Computer" icon.

Double click the "Dial-Up Networking" icon.

Click the "New..." button.

Type "McGill DAS" in the "Name the new phonebook entry": box.

Click the "New..." button. Type McGill DAS in the "Name the new phonebook entry": box,

Click the "Next>" button.

Check "I am calling the Internet."

Check "Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect."

Click the "Next >" button.

(If you have more than one modem or adapter installed, you will be prompted to select the one you will use. Select your modem and click the "Next >" button.)

"Type the Phone number:" 514-398-8211

    or type *70, 514-398-8211 to disable Call Waiting.

Click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Finish" button.

Right click on the McGill DAS icon.

Select "Create shortcut" from the pop-up menu.

Answer "Yes" to place the shortcut on the desktop.

Connecting to DAS

Double click the "Shortcut to McGill DAS" icon on the desktop.

Type your DAS Username on the "User name:" line.

Type your DAS Password on the "Password:" line.

Check the "Save Password" box if you wish.

Click the "Connect" button to log onto the Internet.

Windows 2000

Initial setup

Double click on the "My Computer" icon.

Double click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Double click on the "Network and Dial-Up Connections" icon.

Double click on the "Make New Connection" icon.

On the Network Connection Wizard screen, click on the "Next >" button.

Select "Dial-up to the Internet" then click "Next >"

Select ..."set up ... manually"... then click "Next >"

Select ..."phone... modem"... then click "Next >"

Type the phone number: 514 398-8211

    or *70, 398-8211 to disable Call Waiting

Uncheck "Use area code" and dialing rules then click "Next >"

Type your DAS Username and Password then click "Next >"

Name your connection "McGill DAS" then click "Next >"

When asked to Set up an Internet Mail Account, select "No" then click "Next >"

Uncheck ... "connect.. immediately"... then click "Finish."

Creating a desktop shortcut

Right click the "McGill DAS" icon.

Select "Create Shortcut" from the pop-up menu.

Answer "Yes" to place the shortcut on the desktop.

Connecting to DAS

Double click the "McGill DAS" icon on the desktop.

Click the "Dial" button to dialup to the Internet.

Windows ME

Initial setup

Click the "Start," "Settings" and select the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

Double click the "Make New Connection" icon.

"Type a name for the computer you are dialing:" McGill DAS

"Select a modem/device:" (pick your modem in the list).

Click the "Next >" button.

Type the phone number for the computer you want to call:

"Area code:" (leave blank)

"Telephone number:" 514-398-8211

Select the Country Code: Canada (1)

Click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Finish" button.

Drag the McGill DAS icon to the desktop.

Connecting to DAS

Double click the "Shortcut to McGill DAS" icon.

Type your DAS Username on the User name line.

Type your DAS Password on the Password line.

Check the "Save Password" box if you wish.

Click the "Connect" button to log onto the Internet.

If you subscribe to the Call Waiting telephone service:

Click the "Dial Properties..." button.

Check the "To Disable Call Waiting, dial..." box.

Select *70 from the popup list.

Click the "OK" button.

Windows XP

Initial setup

Click on "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "Communications", "New Connection Wizard".
(At this point, if the location informationis missing, XP will prompt you with the questions like: "What country or region are you in now?..." Fill out this information, until you see the "Welcome to the New Connection Wizard" screen.)

At "Welcome to the New Connection Wizard" screen, click "Next."

Select "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next."

Select "Set up my connection manually" and click "Next."

Select "Connect using a dial-up modem" and click "Next."

Type McGill DAS for ISP Name, and click "Next."

Type 514 398-8211 for Phone Number

    or type *70,514 398-8211 to disable Call Waiting.

Click "Next."

On the User name: line, type your DAS Username.

On the Password: line, type your DAS Password.

On the Confirm password: line, type your DAS Password again to confirm.

Click "Next."

Click the "Add a shortcut to this connection..." box, and click "Finish."

Close the Network and Internet Connections window.

Connecting to DAS

Double click the "McGill DAS" icon on the desktop.

Modify the "Save the username and password for the following users" option if you wish.

Click the "Dial" button to connect to the Internet.

MacOS

Initial setup

From the Apple Menu select "Control Panels, TCP/IP."

From the Connect via: pop-up menu select "PPP."

From the Configure menu select "Using PPP Server."

In the Name server addr.: box, type:

132.206.44.21
132.216.44.21

In the Search domains: box, type: mcgill.ca

Close the control panel window.

From the Apple Menu select "Control Panels, Remote Access."

Select the Registered User radio button.

On the Name: line type your DAS Username.

On the Password: line type your DAS Password.

Check the Save password box if you wish.

On the Number: line type: 514-398-8211

   To disable Call Waiting type: *70, 514-398-8211

Connecting to DAS

From the Apple Menu select "Control Panels, Remote Access."Click the "Connect" button.

MacOS X

Initial setup

On the upper, left hand corner of the desktop, click on the Blue Apple icon in the top toolbar and select “System Preferences…”, select “Network”.

Select the drop down menu corresponding to Location: and select “New Location…”

At the “Enter new Location:” prompt, type DAS

In the tab labeled “TCP/IP”, enter the following information:

Domain Name Servers (Optional)
132.206.44.21
132.216.44.21

Search domains (Optional)
mcgill.ca

Select the tab labeled “PPP”.

On the “Telephone Number:” line, type 398-8211 or *70,398-8211 to disable Call Waiting.

On the “Account Name:” line, type your DAS username

On the “Password: “ line, type your DAS password

Click “Apply Now” on the bottom of the window. A new window will appear with the header that reads, Internal Modem. Note that the telephone number, account name, and password are already configured. Select the checkbox that is labeled “Show modem status” in menu bar.

Click on “Connect” to access DAS.

Connecting to DAS

Use the “internet connect short-cut” located at the top toolbar, in the upper right hand side, represented by a telephone icon.

Single click on the telephone icon and you will be presented with three choices.

Select one of the following:
“Connect” to automatically connect to DAS.
“Disconnect” to disconnect from DAS.
“Open Internet Connect” to change settings.
