    Patent
    (March 18, 1998)
  • U.S. Patent (accepted: number 6,121,530.)
  • Japan Patent (applying)
  • E.P.O (applying)
  • Feature
  • You can retrieve a piece of music from a database by singing. The user's sung melody does not include a word of songs (e.g.ta-ta-ta, da-da-da) and you can find a desired melody without knowing its phrase (words of a song).
  • When a user input a melody, the system allows the user to sing from an arbitrary part of a melody and to choose any key or tempo.
  • Our system uses SMF (Standard MIDI File) for making melody database.
  • Spec.
  • The current system can retrieve a piece of music from a large music database which contains about 10,000 pieces of music within 1 sec.
  • The system is implemented on a LapTop PC (CPU:Mobile Celeron 300MHz, RAM: 128M, OS: Linux kernel 2.2.14).
  • Papers&Prizes
  • ICMC1998, ICMC2000
  • 2nd prize at Venture Contest of Waseda Univ. (Zaiya.com) in Japan.
  • Several prizes at Confererence about Information Science.
  • Press NEWYORK TIMES(October 16, 2000) (thanks to Mr. Masui@a research engineer of Fujitsu Labs., Dr. J.Downie@Univ of Illinois, Mr. Craig@Nevill-Manning).
History In 1997.4, I, Tomo. Sonoda,  began to develop our system for a thesis at my university (WASEDA). The first concept of this system is for retrieving a melody by singing on mobile phones or for using at music shops.

Mr. Kaizuka, who belongs to Fujitsu now, was the first person in our laboratory and he developed a melody retrieval system by using pitch and vowel of musical notes (1996-1997).
We (Prof. Dr. Yoichi Muraoka, Dr. Masataka Goto and I) developed another system which used pitch and span of notes for retrieving.

In 1997.8, we finished to develop our proto type system.
In 1998.3, I start to apply patents to U.S., E.P.O and Japan for building a venture  company.
In 1998-2000, we attended several international conferences and made oral presentations.

Jan. 4th, 2001, we established 'utagoe co., ltd' for the melody retrieval service by singing.
