Schulich School of Music

Founded in 2005 by Shawn Mativetsky, the McGill Tabla Ensemble learns and performs traditional North Indian tabla compositions from the Benares baj (style). Students learn basic tabla techniques, repertoire, and performance practices, with the goal of developing advanced rhythm and improvisation skills, as well as an appreciation for North Indian classical music. Over the course of each semester, the group learns solo tabla repertoire, culminating in an Indian classical tabla soli performance.

The Tabla Ensemble is open to all students in the Schulich School of Music (priority is given to percussion and performance majors). Limited instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are a McGill music student and are interested in joining the ensemble, please contact Mr. Shawn Mativetsky to be placed on the mailing/waiting list for the course.

Please refer to Coming Events for upcoming performances of the McGill Tabla Ensemble.
