Biographie (English version below)

 

Peter Schubert, avant sa venue à Montréal de la ville de New York, a fondé et dirigé L’Opéra Uptown et les New Calliope Singers, groupe reconnu pour privilégier la musique moderne. Cet ensemble vocal a fait plus de 50 créations et enregistré un disque compact salué par les critiques intitulé «New Cantatas and Madrigals» (CRI 638).

Depuis 1991, Peter Schubert a dirigé les très réputés Chanteurs d’Orphée de Montréal. Sous sa direction, cet ensemble a été finaliste à plusieurs reprises lors des compétitions pour chorales amateurs de la SRC, remportant le premier prix dans la catégorie chœurs de chambre en 1996. Les Chanteurs d’Orphée ont présenté plusieurs créations d’œuvres canadiennes et participé à l’enregistrement d’un disque compact des œuvres musicales de Friedrich Nietzsche (Les Disques Albany).

En 1998, il a fondé VivaVoce, un ensemble vocal professionnel créé pour raviver l’intérêt de la musique de chambre chorale, de la Renaissance à aujourd’hui. En présentant des concerts interactifs commentés, une expérience unique, VivaVoce ravit et divertit tous les publics, du plus jeune au plus âgé, tout en leur inculquant une connaissance approfondie de leur héritage musical.

Peter Schubert a étudié la direction d'orchestre avec Nadia Boulanger, Helmuth Rilling, Jacques-Louis Monod et David Gilbert. Il a été l'assistant de Gregg Smith et d'Agnes Grossman. Il a publié une édition des noëls de la Renaissance et cinq arrangements innovateurs de chants de Noël (aux presses C.F. Peters).

Il détient un doctorat en musicologie de l’université Columbia. Actuellement professeur à la faculté de musique de l’université McGill, Peter Schubert a écrit un manuel unique et tenu en haute estime, Modal Counterpoint, Renaissance Style (aux presses de l’Université Oxford, 1999).

Peter Schubert came to Montreal from New York City, where he founded and directed Opera Uptown and The New Calliope Singers, a group renowned for its commitment to modern music during its fifteen-year career. The group presented over fifty premieres and released a critically acclaimed CD entitled "New Cantatas and Madrigals."

Since 1991, he has conducted the highly respected Montreal-based group, The Orpheus Singers. Under his direction, the group has placed as a finalist several times the CBC Competition for Amateur Choruses, winning first prize in the chamber chorus category in 1996. The Orpheus Singers has presented premieres of several new Canadian works and participated in a CD of the musical compositions of Freidrich Nietzsche.

In 1998, Peter Schubert founded VivaVoce, a professional vocal ensemble, to stimulate interest in choral chamber music ranging from the Renaissance to the day before yesterday. By presenting unique, interactive "commentated concerts" in schools and concert halls, VivaVoce delights and entertains it audiences of all ages, instilling in them a deeper understanding of their musical heritage.

Peter Schubert studied conducting with Nadia Boulanger, Helmuth Rilling, Jacques-Louis Monod and David Gilbert and has been assistant to Gregg Smith and Agnes Grossman. He has published an edition of Renaissance Noels as well as his own innovative arrangements of five popular Christmas carols with C.F. Peters.

Schubert holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Columbia University, which gives him a rich base on which to draw for his commentated concerts. Currently an Associate Professor at the McGill University Faculty of Music, Schubert is the author of a groundbreaking and highly regarded textbook, Modal Counterpoint, Renaissance Style (Oxford University Press, 1999).
