MUHL 220: Women in Music
An introduction to the roles, musical experiences, and artistic
achievements of women in a variety of musical traditions and cultures.
A case study format will be adopted to permit in-depth analysis of specific
musical achievements and exploration of the various social, political,
and cultural forces that have shaped women’s musical activity. While
emphasis will be placed on contemporary European, American, and Canadian
musicians, exploration will adopt a cross-cultural perspective that approaches
music, not in the traditional sense as “work,” but as a way
of “writing and re-writing” (shaping and discovering) our
own identities. Re-current themes will question traditional conceptions
of music history as a mode of knowing, as well as concepts such as power,
authorship, genius, voice, body, and gender.
Graduate Seminar
This course explores contemporary Operas written by a Canadian
composer and/or with the involvement of a Canadian librettist, including
(but not limited to) works by Louis Applebaum, Istvan Anhalt, Rodney Sharman
and Atom Eyoyan, Ka Nin Chan, Bruce Mather, Harry Somers, Alexina Louie,
Randolph Peters, D. D. Jackson, Murray Schafer, and Margaret Atwood. Exploration
will follow four thematic strands: (a) identity as Opera; (b) composer/librettist
as a reader of Canadian culture; (c) opera as constitutive of Canadian
culture; and (d) challenges of interpretation and realization.
