PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

McGill University, Associate Professor from June 1993-present; Assistant Professor, 1989-1993; University Lecturer, 1988-1989. I teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in musicology and conducting, with a focus on aesthetics, philosophical issues, Canadian music, and theorizing performance. In addition to my teaching and conducting, I am a critically acclaimed author and scholar. I am currently writing a book entitled, “Music on My Mind, Music in My Body” that takes as its starting point the schism that exists between the performer’s experience of music as sound and its description or explication by philosophers and theorists. My innovative phenomenological approach was recently the subject of an extensive citation in Philosophical Perspectives by Wayne Bowman (Oxford University Press, 1998). As a member of the John Adaskin Project (Canadian Music Centre), I have also written extensively on music by Canadian composers. A summary of my recent professional activity is provided below.
