Slow-movement Forms

17

Let's Practice 17.2
Haydn, Symphony No. 89 in F
second movement, 30–49

  1. compound basic idea + continuation; note that initial basic idea has marked "cadential" content
  2. HK: PAC; a small binary form, whose second part brings a contrasting middle followed by a new continuation
  3. the cadential dominant resolves deceptively, and the new harmony quickly becomes a pre-dominant for a HC on the downbeat of m. 46, followed by a brief standing on the dominant; to keep the interior theme “open,” in order to motivate strongly the return of the main theme
