Let's Practice 17.3
Mozart, Piano Sonata in D, K. 284
third movement, var. 7

  1. the opening antecedent of the minore models closely the antecedent of the theme, except for the added chromaticism leading to the HC; the second phrase, which was a simple continuation in the theme, is now supported by an expanded cadential progression to yield a cadential phrase, thus creating the overall hybrid type antecedent + cadential.
  2. Like the theme, the music of the minore following the double bar line brings a contrasting middle built as a continuation. But after the HC, the minore brings back a variant of the cadential phrase from mm. 5–8, now transposed into the home key
  3. small binary; the opening basic idea is not brought back in the second half of the form
