CHAPTER
Slow-movement Forms
- the movement might otherwise become too long
- they contain three sections, the second of which is contrasting to first, the third of which brings back materials from the first; they have differing tonal, harmonic, cadential, and phrase-structural characteristics
- main theme
- small ternary
- an incomplete theme consisting of the A and B sections of the small ternary but lacking an A' section
- material from the interior theme; this material cannot normally be referenced in the return of the main theme
- a major-mode variation within an overall minor-mode theme and variations movement
- retransition
- in sonata-without-development form, a recapitulation that consists exclusively of the main theme
- it would result in a potentially redundant three-fold restatement (rotation) of the same thematic functions
