Roger Feria Jr. (Bio)

Roger Feria Jr., a native of Taiwan, completed a Master of Music in Composition at the University of Calgary, and has studied with Allan Bell, David Eagle, and William Jordan. He began piano studies at the age of three, and studied with Peter Turner and with Marilyn Engle at the University of Calgary. As a composer, Roger has won prizes in the SOCAN Competition and Land's End Chamber Ensemble for his solo piano work and piano trio. In 2004, Roger was featured as one of the top 30 young composers in Canada, and had his trio performed at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival.

Roger received a prestigious Composition Fellowship for the Tanglewood Music Center in 2005, where he studied with Michael Gandolfi, Bright Sheng, George Benjamin, Augusta Read Thomas, Steve Mackey, and John Harbison, as well as having performances of his vocal and chamber music works. In the summer of 2006, he worked with Canadian composers Denys Bouliane, Jean Lesage, and German composer Michael Denhoff at the New Music Symposium at Domaine Forget, and was invited back in the summer of 2007 for the premiere of a piece commissioned by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Song of the Divine Strings which was broadcast on Radio-Canada's 'Espace Musique' in October 2007.

Roger is currently working with Denys Bouliane on his PhD. in composition at McGill University's Schulich School of Music, as a recipient of the prestigious Max Stern Fellowship for graduate studies and grants from the Canada Council and Alberta Foundation for the Arts. He was recently awarded the Robert Fleming Prize awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
